Arthur Byron

Arthur William Byron (born April 3, 1872 in Brooklyn , New York , † July 17, 1943 in Hollywood , California ) was an American actor.

life and career

Arthur Byron was the son of the actor couple Oliver Doud Byron (1842-1920) and Kate Crehan, his mother was a sister of the popular actress Ada Rehan . He made his debut in his father's drama company at the age of 17 and quickly became a popular actor. He was one of the busiest actors on Broadway , appearing there in nearly 50 plays between 1894 and 1939. He also worked there as an author and producer of plays. In his 50 years on the stage, he is said to have played over 300 characters in more than 10,000 performances.

Like many other theater actors, Byron made his debut as a film actor only with the beginning of the sound film . In his short film career between 1932 and 1936, Byron played in a total of 26 films, often in supporting roles as a respectable authority figure - for example as a general, doctor or scientist. In the horror classic The Mummy in 1932 he played the respected archaeologist Sir Joseph Whemple, who fell victim to the mysterious mummy ( Boris Karloff ). In the same year he was a warden at the side of Spencer Tracy in 20,000 Years in Sing Sing to be seen. His last film was The Prisoner of Zenda , but Byron's scenes were cut from the film.

Byron was a founding member of the Actors' Equity Association in 1913 and was elected President in 1938. He married his first wife Lillian Hall in 1898. His second marriage to Kathryn Keys had four children. Arthur Byron died in 1943 at the age of 71.
