Herman Shumlin

Herman Shumlin (born December 6, 1898 in Atwood , Colorado , † June 4, 1979 in New York City , New York ) was an American theater producer and director , who became known for his Broadway productions. He also worked as a director and film producer for two films. Herman Shumlin was the mentor and early employer of the later high profile Broadway theater producer David Merrick .

Life

Herman Shumlin's career began in 1927 with celebrity and ended in 1974 after 45 Broadway productions with a film adaptation of the play As You Like It ( As You Like It ). His most successful productions included Die kleine Füchse (1939/40), Menschen im Hotel (1930) and Who sows the Wind (1955–1957) with Paul Muni .

He directed two films: an adaptation of his Broadway production Die Wacht am Rhein (Watch On The Rhine) from 1943 and Jagd im Nebel (Confidential Agent) based on Graham Greene from 1945.

In 1964 he was honored with a Tony Award for The Deputy .
