Dragan Nikolić (born August 20, 1943 in Belgrade , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † March 11, 2016 in Belgrade, Republic of Serbia ) was a Yugoslav and Serbian actor .

Life

Dragan Nikolić was born Dragoslav Nikolić in Belgrade. After primary school, he first attended Belgrade's 14th grammar school for two years. He studied acting at the Academy of Theater, Film, Radio and Television in Belgrade, where he was the youngest student. His film career began in 1964 with a minor role in the film Pravo stanje stvari . Nikolić acted in a total of over 100 films. He had leading roles and important supporting roles in more than 30 films. From 1965 he used his nickname "Dragan" as an artist name after his name was incorrectly given in the credits as Dragan Nikolić in the Yugoslav television series Dovoljno je ćutati .

With his first leading role, a seasonal worker with unstable morals, in the Yugoslav film Kad budem mrtav i beo (1967), he achieved his breakthrough as a film actor under the direction of Živojin Pavlović . He received an award for his role at the Pula Film Festival in 1968 .

In the Yugoslav adventure and historical film Der Falke (1981) he played the Turkish bandit Alija, alongside Franco Nero in the title role. In the Yugoslav film drama Friedenszeit in Paris (1981), a triangular story, he played the young Yugoslav Dragan, who was looking for archival material on acts of violence for a film, and who met a young French sculptor in Paris. Nikolić's partners were Maria Schneider and Alain Noury . With the role of the violent Gare in the film Život je lep (1985) he became a Yugoslav film legend. He had his best-known television role in the television series Otpisani (1974-1975) and the sequel Povratak optisanih (1976). He embodied the role of Prle, a Yugoslav partisan and resistance fighter in World War II .

Since 1969 he played at the Belgrade Drama Theater (BDP; Beogradsko dramsko pozorište) and at the theater "Atelier 212" (Atelje 212). He appeared as a stage actor in over 20 leading roles. In the 1982/83 season he was a guest at the Theater de la Ville in Paris . There he played the thief Vaska Pepel in Depths of Maxim Gorky in a production directed by Lucian Pintilie ; he also appeared there as Yeshua in a stage version of the novel The Master and Margarita (director: M. Serban).

From 2011 to 2013 he hosted the Serbian edition of the quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? .

Nikolić has won numerous national film awards. In 1981 he received the “Golden Arena” at the Pula Film Festival for his role in the film Banoviću Strahinji (1980). In 2000 he received the “Pavle Vujisić” film prize for his life's work.

Dragan Nikolić was married to the Serbian actress Milena Dravić . In February 2015 he was operated on in Belgrade for a disease of the stomach and digestive tract. In May 2015, his condition deteriorated sharply; since then he has been in constant hospital treatment. Nikolić died in March 2016 at the age of 72 as a result of his illness. On March 14th Nikolić was buried in Belgrade's New Cemetery (Novo Groblje Cemetery).
