The church of St. Georg is a sacred building in Schönau-Berzdorf on the Eigen in the district of Görlitz in Saxony .

The Protestant church is located in the middle of Schönau on the main street in the immediate vicinity of the rectory and the municipal administration.

history

The church was first mentioned in 1296, when the pastor Johannes, who was then active in the office, appeared in a legal dispute. In 1429 or 1431 the church was destroyed by fire as a result of the Hussite Wars . In 1463 the church received new bells as a result of the reconstruction. From 1573 to 1580 new pews and in 1611 a new pulpit were made. An organ was installed in 1669. As the church initially only had a small tower or roof turret , a new tower with two openings was added in 1737. In 1833 a great storm broke the tower over the belfry and it fell down.

In 1880 a flood caused internal damage to the church. As a result, the church was thoroughly renovated in 1881/1882 and rededicated in 1882. In 1883 a new organ was installed. A bell system was installed in 1906 and an electrical lighting system in 1912. The church tower was renovated in 1929 as a result of weather damage. The entrance portal was added as a new component in 1934. After the Second World War, the old bell was returned to the tower in 1948, which was then to be re-covered with copper sheet in 1966, but this only happened from 1977 to 1979. In 1972 there was a tower fire due to damage to the electrical system.

In 1973 a bell machine was installed by the Herford-based Elektricitätswerke Bokelmann & Kuhlo, which also guaranteed the daytime bell. At the same time, the entire bell cage was reassembled and the blinds pulled in. The handover ceremony took place in 1975. In 1996 the entire electrical system, which originated in 1908, was converted to 220 V AC. In the nave , staircase, chancel and sacristy was designed Restoration applied and then color, stairs and windows repaired and subjected the whole Church a wooden worm control. In 1996 the defensive wall surrounding the church was also rebuilt. At the end of the nineties, seat heating was installed for the front rows of seats.
