Devil's stone from Jablonec nad Nisou

The Devil's Stone from Jablonec nad Nisou , in Czech Čertův kámen , is located in the Czech Republic , in the town of Jablonec nad Nisou (German: Gablonz an der Neisse) , which belongs to the Liberec region . The Teufelsstein forms a dolmen-like rock formation, a large granite block is the capstone, which rests on four smaller blocks and below it forms a considerable cave with several gates. The arrangement of the stones is considered a freak of nature. The location is in the district of Vrkoslavice , whose unofficial coat of arms and the municipal stamp bear a representation of the rock.

history

The legend of a former evocation of the devil in a nearby chapel is associated with the devil's stone . People hoped for wealth from the devil. The pastor learned of the outrage and took action against it. The devil worshipers fled. Then the devil appeared on the rock by the chapel with a sack full of gold and precious stones. But when he saw the fugitives and the pastor, he got angry and hit the devil's stone with his tail. At the place where the devil sat and hit the rock with his tail, there is still a depression with a groove. The Jablonec chronicler Adolf Lilie reported in 1895 that stonemasons tried to obtain stone in vain . Evidence of these efforts are still existing drifting wedge holes .

Solar phenomenon

Astronomical measurements by the Archaeoastronomy Section of the “Bruno-H.-Bürgel” observatory in Sohland / Spree e. V. showed in 2011 that the stone formation is ideal for calendar solar observations . As a result, the rock structure was questioned as a purely natural work. The established calendar sun observation scheme corresponds to that of other rocks in Upper Lusatia and the Czech Republic , such as the Heidenstein from Višňová with the devil's legend and alleged "Devil's Seats" and the Devil's Stone from Pliesskowitz , where there is also an alleged "Seat / buttocks impression of the devil". The archaeoastronomical research project of the Sohland observatory was named "Project Gods Hand " and the rock objects that show the calendar phenomenon of solar observation are referred to as the " Sun Sanctuaries of Upper Lusatia ".
