The sun paths are a circular hiking trail. It leads along the communities of Sohland an der Spree , Wehrsdorf and Taubenheim / Spree in the Saxon Upper Lusatia . The concept is a joint project between the municipalities and the Sohland / Spree Observatory Association . It is based on the results of the archaeoastronomical research project Götterhand of the Department of Archaeoastronomy of the Sohland Observatory. The task of the research project was to search for calendar astronomical solar functions on rock and stone formations in Upper Lusatia and neighboring regions. Over forty objects have been found that have a possible function and are therefore referred to as the sun shrines of Upper Lusatia . The implementation of the tourism concept based on the research was funded by the Free State of Saxony and the European Union.

character

The “sun paths” lead long stretches through forests along meadows and fields. Sometimes brooks cross the path. The route crosses the Spree twice. Stage points are distinctive stone and rock formations that have calendar functions of the sun. In the south, the route follows the German-Czech border. Most of the route is easy to manage even without special fitness. However, some stage points (sun sanctuaries) are located on hills that require quite a bit of effort. You should plan a whole day to cover the entire route. However, the route can be shortened as required, as it runs around the villages. Gastronomy is available within the localities. Immediately on the route are the Prinz-Friedrich-August-Baude, the Gasthaus Jägersruh and the gastronomy at the Sohlander reservoir . The individual objects can often be reached by bike with a little effort. The sun paths as a circular route are unsuitable for cycling. Information boards are bilingual, German / Czech.

course

The “Bruno-H.-Bürgel” observatory in Sohland on the Spree is located in the center of the circular hiking trail. A replica of the Königshain cuckoo stone is in half its original size on the observatory grounds. Equipped with various information boards. The replica serves as a functional model for the clarification of the calendar-astronomical functionality of the "Sun Sanctuaries of Upper Lusatia" and as an information and starting point for hikes on the "Sun Paths". The large circuit runs around the villages of Sohland and Wehrsdorf and touches the village of Taubenheim. Much of the route follows the border with the Czech Republic and is identical to the border hiking trail. She only leaves it to reach remote objects. Another part of the route follows the panorama path around Wehrsdorf to the so-called Funkenburg. There the path of the Große Runde leads to the Spree , crosses it at the reservoir and leads up to the Kälberstein. From there it goes down towards Taubenheim to the spring mountain and on to the Hornsberg, an eastern branch of the Taubenberg next to the border crossing to the Czech Republic. From there it goes back to the observatory, where, if the weather is good, the starry night sky can be observed through powerful telescopes during opening times. The big round can be divided into an eastern round and a western round. The eastern round is the smaller one. It can in turn be supplemented with a detour to the sundial village Taubenheim. Since the "Sun Sanctuaries of Upper Lusatia" are spread over large areas of Upper Lusatia, the hikes can be extended to more distant objects. B. to Neusalza-Spremberg to "Thors Amboss" , to Neustadt / Sa. To the "Heavenly Eyes" and the "Mondbach Temple", to Neukirch / Lausitz to the Valtenberg Altar , to Wilthen to the "God's Hand " on the Sora Devil's Pulpit , to the Devil's Stone from Pliesskowitz with a detour to the Bautzen observatory or to the mountains of the gods Bieleboh (White God) and Czorneboh (Black God).
