The Prinz-Friedrich-August-Höhe ( 469.1  m ), mostly called Friedrich-August-Höhe for short , is a mountain in the Bautzen district in Saxony . It is located in the southwest of the district of Sohland on the Spree near Neudorf in the Lausitzer Bergland .

geography

The Friedrich-August-Höhe is the southeastern extension of the Kinderberg ( Liščí vrch , 480  m ). It rises north of Neudorf and is surrounded by the Sohlander Dorfbach in the south and by Tännichtwasser in the north . The Tännichtberg rises to the north ( 461  m ), to the southeast the Müllersberg ( 401  m ), to the south the Schwarze Koppe ( 470  m ), to the southwest the Barthelsberg ( 462  m ) and west the Fuchsberg ( 473  m ). At its foot lies Tännicht in the north, Obersohland in the east and Neudorf in the south. To the west is Röhrsdorf ( Liščí ) in the Bohemian region . The Oberlausitzer Bergweg runs over the Friedrich-August-Höhe .

history

Until the end of the 19th century, the Friedrich-August-Höhe was an unnamed elevation crowned by low granodiorite cliffs on the southern edge of the Tännicht Forest. In 1900 a mountain hut with an observation tower was built on the hill , named after the Saxon Prince Friedrich August .

In the 1950s, the Sohland skiers, who previously had their domicile on the Schwarzen Koppe, built new winter sports facilities around the Friedrich-August-Höhe. In 1950, a downhill route to Schmottlachs Wiese was built on the eastern slope on today's Bergweg in Obersohland. Three years later, cross-country trails were laid on the Prinz-Friedrich-August-Höhe as well as a Kradjöring route from the Sonnenblick children's home in Obersohland to the former customs office near Neudorf or on the height. There was also a toboggan run from Prinz-Friedrich-August-Höhe to the Böhme joinery. In 1956, a new downhill route to the Habichtwiese with the difficulties “Linas Höh”, “Kamel” and “Kanonenrohr” was built on the north slope.

The Prinz-Friedrich-August-Baude, managed by the HO, had been called "Grenzbaude" since the 1960s , and the observation tower was given no name.

The slopes on Friedrich-August-Höhe were not given up in the 1970s after the construction of the new Tänn winter sports center.

The today with the observation tower under monument protection standing Prinz-Friedrich-August-Baude is managed as a mountain restaurant. Next to the hut there is a mini golf course and a playground at the garden bar.

Prince Friedrich August Tower

The stone observation tower, built in 1900, is 20 m high and is attached to the mountain hut of the same name. The open viewing platform has been covered since its renovation. The view extends in the east over Obersohland to Brandbusch, in the southeast to Neugrafenwalde and Schluckenau as well as to Spitzberg ( Špičák , 481  m ) and in the south over Neudorf to Schwarzen Koppe.
