Richard Stoltzman

Richard Leslie Stoltzman (born July 12, 1942 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American clarinetist .

Life

Richard Stoltzman was born in Omaha . His father worked for the Western Pacific Railroad and shortly after Richard was born, the family moved to San Francisco , where Richard grew up. His first encounters with music came from his father, who played big band music. Stoltzman began playing the clarinet at the age of eight and then played with his father at home and in an orchestra. His earliest musical mentor was Benny Goodman . In 1960 Stoltzman graduated from Woodward High School in Cincinnati . He then studied at Ohio State Universityin Columbus , Ohio math and music and received his Bachelor of Music in 1964 . He then studied with Professor Keith Wilson at the Yale School of Music , which is part of Yale University , and made his master's degree (Master of Music) there in 1967 .

Stoltzman had his first successes at the Marlboro Music Festival , where he performed for ten years. He also appeared at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York .

As a soloist, Stoltzman has performed with over 100 different symphony orchestras (including the New York Philharmonic and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra ), at various jazz festivals and with many different well-known musicians such as Mel Tormé , George Shearing , Judy Collins , Woody Herman , Wayne Shorter , Chick Corea and Claude Bolling . In 1973 he founded the chamber music quartet Tashi together with Peter Serkin , Ida Kavafian and Fred Sherry . In total, Stoltzman released about 40 albums, some with Tashi . He plays the clarinet in the 1976 version of the American documentary Nanuk, the Eskimo . In August 1993, Stoltzman was part of the BBC television series Concerto! with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and the London Symphony Orchestra . In addition, Stoltzman played with many other chamber musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma , Richard Goode and Emanuel Ax ; joint performances were later awarded prizes. He also worked for many years with the composer William Thomas McKinley .

In 1983 and 1996 Stoltzman was awarded the Grammy Award in the category “Best Chamber Music Performance”. In addition, he was nominated six more times for a Grammy in 1977, 1984, 1989, 1991, 1994 and 2005. In 1986 he was the first wind musician to be awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in recognition of his services to classical music . In 2005 he received the Sanford Medal from Yale University .

In 2013 Stoltzman was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Stoltzman is one of the most famous clarinetists today.
