Ormond Beach is a city in Volusia County in the US state of Florida with 38,137 inhabitants (as of 2010). After Deltona and Daytona Beach, it is the third largest city in the MSA Deltona – Daytona Beach – Ormond Beach .

geography

Ormond Beach is on the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway and borders the cities of Daytona Beach and Holly Hill . The city is about 35 km northeast of DeLand and 90 km north of Orlando .

history

The area around what is now Ormond Beach was originally settled by the Timucuan tribe.

In the aftermath of the Seven Years' War , Florida was transferred from Spain to Great Britain in exchange for Cuba . The country then flourished briefly when white farmers and settlers settled down and established plantations on which mainly rice and indigo were grown. In 1783 Spain regained possession of the area, after which many British left it. It remained with Spain until it became the United States Territory in 1821 . While still under Spanish rule, the families of James and George Anderson , of Captain James Ormond I and the Dumette family received permission to settle. Captain Ormond was murdered by a runaway slave in 1817. In addition to the cultivation of sugar and cotton , shipbuilding was now carried out on a modest scale. Both merchant ships and warships for the US Navy were built . In 1835, a conflict about hunting and fishing rights, but above all about the freedom of movement of the members of the Seminole tribe , developed into a bloody conflict that went down in history as the Second Seminole War . As a result, the settlers had to be evacuated to St. Augustine . The plantations were destroyed.

In the period after the Civil War (1861-1865) iron hulls began to prevail. This made the construction of wooden ships from their own oak wood unprofitable. Oranges began to be grown in the 1870s . Native and former harvester of Corbin Lock Company of New Britain , Connecticut in 1875 founded the village of New Britain . As early as 1880 it was renamed to Captain Ormond in memory of the pioneer. John Anderson and JD Price built the Ormond Hotel , which opened on New Year's Eve 1887. It soon came into the possession of the railroad magnate and tourism pioneer Henry Morrison Flagler , who expanded it into an exclusive winter residence for 600 guests. Ormond became one of the first winter resorts in Florida. John D. Rockefeller was one of the early guests . He liked Ormond so much that he bought his own residence here in 1917.

Anderson and Price expanded the tourist offer with guided tours in steam cars . With WJ Morgan they hired a promoter for motorsport events, which were carried out from 1902. Several world speed records were set on the sands of Ormond Beach. After a short time, most of the action shifted to neighboring Daytona Beach . A club with a garage for the racing cars was built on the border to Daytona Beach. As one of the first places in the USA with regular racing, Ormond Beach describes itself with some justification as the Birthplace of Speed . Since 2003, a winter event with historic vehicles has been held on Ormond Beach under this name.

In the 1930s, places like Palm Beach or Jekyll Island replaced Ormond as fashionable winter resorts. In 1937 John D. Rockefeller died in Ormond on his Casements estate . In a roundabout way, it later came into the possession of the city and is now used as a cultural and community center. In 1949 the place was renamed Ormond Beach . Much of the old Ormond has not survived. The racing car garage burned down in 1976, together with the collection of historic vehicles it now contains. The Ormond Hotel was demolished in 1992.
