Gotha is a census-designated place (CDP) in Orange County in the US state of Florida with 1915 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Gotha borders the cities of Ocoee (west) and Orlando (east). Here the East-West Expressway (SR 408, toll) branches off from Florida's Turnpike (SR 91, toll).

history

The settlement was founded in 1885 by the German immigrant HA Hempel, who named it after his former homeland, Gotha in Thuringia . Today the main street of the village ( Hempel Avenue ) is named after him.

In 1888 the Florida Midland Railway was opened, running from Lake Jesup via Clarcona and Gotha to Kissimmee . In 1896 the company was incorporated into the Plant System . Further owners were subsequently the ACL (1902-1967), the SCL (1967-1986) and CSX (since 1986).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 1915 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 519 households. The population density was 416.3 inh / km². 78.3% of the population identified themselves as whites , 6.8% as African-Americans , 0.5% as Indians, and 9.1% as Asian Americans . 3.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.1% to several ethnic groups. 12.2% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 55.3% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 15.5% of all households. 85.3% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 3.22 people and the average family size was 3.48 people.

34.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 18.2% were 20 to 39 years old, 35.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 11.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39 years. 49.3% of the population were male and 50.7% were female.

The median annual income was $ 103,750, with 3.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 100% of the population.

On November 7, 2000, the Palm Cottage Gardens were inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .
