Longwood is a city in Seminole County in the US state of Florida with 13,657 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Longwood is directly adjacent to the towns of Casselberry (south) and Winter Springs (east). The city is about 10 km southwest of Sanford and about 15 km north of Orlando .
history
Longwood was first connected to the railroad network by the South Florida Railroad in 1880. In 1886 the Orange Belt Railway was built from Sanford via Longwood to Oakland , which was extended to Saint Petersburg in 1888 . After several takeovers, the line was shut down when the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad was founded in 1967. Another route was the Florida Midland Railway , opened in 1888 , which ran from Lake Jesup via Longwood and Clarcona to Kissimmee . When the plant system took over the route in 1896, the Lake Jesup - Clarcona section was also closed.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 13,657 inhabitants were distributed over 5,235 households. The population density was 989.6 inh / km². 85.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 5.1% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 3.4% as Asian Americans . 3.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.5% to several ethnic groups. 15.8% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 28.3% of all households lived in 32.6% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 67.3% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.03.
23.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 30.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 42 years. 47.8% of the population were male and 52.2% were female.
The median annual income was $ 56,798, with 9.4% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 86.56% of the population, 11.02% spoke Spanish and 2.42% had another mother tongue.

Longwood is affected by Interstate 4 , crossed on a shared route by US Highways 17 and 92 ( SR 15 , 600 ) and Florida State Road 434 . The nearest airport is Orlando Sanford International Airport (around 10 km northeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 326 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There was one murder, two rapes, 15 robberies, 57 assaults, 170 break-ins, 364 thefts, and ten car thefts.
