As Sanford station ( English : Sanford station ) are two different, closely spaced stations in Sanford in the US state of Florida .

One is a station of the so-called auto-train , the railway company of the Amtrak -operated car passenger train from here to Lorton in the state of Virginia . On the other hand, it means the station of the SunRail regional train .

Amtrak train station

With the founding of the Amtrak railway company in 1971, the Auto-Train Corporation was formed, which in the same year established a car train connection to Lorton for the first time. For this purpose, a new station for motorail trains was opened just south of the existing passenger station in Sanford. When the company went bankrupt, the service was temporarily suspended in April 1981. As early as 1983, operations were resumed with the new Auto Train . Amtrak calls it the world's longest passenger train. To date, the Sanford - Lorton connection is the only car train connection in the United States. In the 2014 financial year, the connection was used by 274,445 passengers.

history

In 1880, Sanford got its first rail connection when the South Florida Railroad opened the line from Sanford to Orlando . In 1883 the route was extended to Tampa , where the harbor was reached and from now on goods could be transferred from the water to the land. In 1886 the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway built a connection from Sanford to Jacksonville . In 1887, the Sanford and Lake Eustis Railroad to Sorrento , Mount Dora and Tavares was opened, which was shut down in the 1980s.

The South Florida Railroad and the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway merged with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) in 1902 . The first passenger station was opened by the ACL in 1913, which was replaced by a new one in 1953. In 1967 the ACL merged with the Seaboard Air Line Railroad to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad and in 1971 the station was taken over by the newly founded Amtrak railway company .

Until 2005, the station was a station of the Amtrak-operated Sunset Limited from Orlando to Los Angeles . However, after the effects of Hurricane Katrina , the line was shortened to the New Orleans - Los Angeles route. In the same year, the Amtrak trains Silver Star and Silver Meteor , which have since passed the station without stopping , were also canceled . The station was no longer to be used for passenger traffic for almost nine years.

Connection

On May 1, 2014, passenger traffic was resumed. Since then, the station has been served by SunRail on the route from DeBary via Downtown Orlando to Pine Castle , which means that the Greater Orlando conurbation is better served by local rail transport. On July 30, 2018, an extension of this line in the south to Poinciana was opened.

The next possibility to change trains to the Silver Star and Silver Meteor trains in the direction of Miami and New York City is in Winter Park (in the south), with the opening of the Sunrail extension also in DeLand (in the north).
