The SaskTel Center is a multi-purpose hall in the Canadian city of Saskatoon , Saskatchewan Province . It is located on the northeastern edge of the city and opened on February 9, 1988. The arena now has space for a maximum of 15,100 spectators and is home to the Saskatoon Blades ice hockey team .
history
The arena opened on February 9, 1988 and initially had a capacity of 7,800 seats. To host the 1991 Junior Ice Hockey World Championship , it was expanded to 11,300 places. In preparation for the 2010 U20 Ice Hockey World Championship, the hall was renovated from January to November 2009, increasing the capacity by a further 3,000 seats. In addition, the changing areas have been adapted to current requirements.
Since 2014, the hall has been named for the Canadian telecommunications company SaskTel for ten years . The company pays CAD 350,000 annually for this .
Events
In addition to the regular home games of the Saskatoon Blades , other events took place in the SaskTel Center.
- In 1991 and 2010 , the arena hosted the junior ice hockey world championship .
- Some of the 1991 Canada Cup games were played indoors.
- The University Cup , the Canadian university championship in ice hockey, from 1998 to 2000 took place in Saskatchewan Place.
- A game of the Super Series 2007 , an ice hockey competition between the junior national teams of Russia and Canada, was played in the arena.
- In 1989, the place Memorial Cup of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) in Saskatchewan Place instead.
- In 1999 the arena was the venue for the women's volleyball world championship .
- In 2005 the main event for the 100th birthday of Saskatchewan as a Canadian province took place in the CUC, at which the head of state, Elizabeth II , and her husband Prince Philip were present.
- In 2007 the Juno Awards were presented in the arena.
- The Canadian Men's Curling Championships, called The Brier , were held indoors in 1989, 2000 and 2004; the women's tournament, the Tournament of Hearts , in 1991.
