Hopak, also pronounced Gopak in Russian , is a Ukrainian folk dance. The dance comes from the time of the Zaporozhian Cossacks . Hopak is danced individually, in pairs or in larger groups. The Hopak dance includes quick turns and jumps that are performed by men. Elements of Hopaks were incorporated into some operas and ballets like The Fair at Sorochyntsi by Modest Mussorgsky . The word Hopak comes from the Ukrainian hopaty, which means “to jump”, or from the exclamation word Hop !, which means an instruction to jump or quick movement.

A new Ukrainian martial art called Kampfhopak emerged in the 1980s . She combines some elements of Hopak with Eastern martial arts techniques.
