Balanops is the only genus of plants in the family of the Balanopaceae within the order of the Malpighia-like (Malpighiales). The nine or so species occur only in the southwestern Pacific region .
description
The Balanops species are trees or shrubs ; they look like Myrica . The alternate or seemingly lively arranged, stalked leaves are simple, leathery and pinnate. The leaf margin is smooth or serrated. Stipules are missing.
The Balanops species are dioecious, separate sexes ( diocesan ). The male flowers are grouped in kitten-shaped inflorescences . The female flowers stand individually in a fruit cup (cupula) made of spirally arranged bracts . The bracts are reduced; the male flowers still have a scale, the female flowers completely lacking them. The male flowers usually contain five to six (two to twelve) stamens . Filaments are present or absent. Two to three carpels are a syncarp, Upper permanent ovary grown. There are two free pens available. Pollination takes place by the wind ( anemophilia ).
The stone fruits contain one to three seeds. Around the drupes there are still the fruit cups, which are similar to those of oaks .
Systematics and distribution
The Balanopaceae family was established by George Bentham and Joseph Dalton Hooker . The name Balanopaceae Benth. & Hook. f. nom. cons. is preserved. The type genus of the family Balanopaceae is Balanops Baill. : The botanical generic name Balanops is derived from the Greek : balanos for acorn and ops for "look similar". The family of the Balanopaceae is close to the families of the Trigoniaceae , Dichapetalaceae , Chrysobalanaceae , Euphroniaceae . It used to be placed in the Fagales or Buxales orders .
Balanops species are found in the southwestern Pacific on Vanuatu and Fiji (one species), on New Caledonia (seven species) and in the Australian state of Queensland (one species).
There are nine to twelve species in the genus Balanops and thus in the family:
- Balanops australiana F. Muell. : It occurs only in northern Queensland .
- Balanops balansae Baill. : It occurs in New Caledonia only on Mt. Mou and Mt. Nékando.
- Balanops microstachya Baill. : It occurs in New Caledonia only in "rade de Canala".
- Balanops oliviformis Baill. : It occurs only in central New Caledonia.
- Balanops pachyphylla Baill. ex Guillaumin : It occurs in New Caledonia.
- Balanops pancheri Baill. (Syn .: Balanops pancheri var. Simplex Baill. , Balanops theophrasta Baill. , Balanops acicarpa S.Moore ): It occurs only in New Caledonia.
- Balanops pedicellata (Guillaumin) Hjelmq. (Syn .: Balanops vitiensis (ACSm.) Hjelmq. ): It occurs on Vanuatu and Fiji .
- Balanops sparsifolia (Schltr.) Hjelmq. : It occurs in New Caledonia.
- Balanops vieillardii Baill. : It occurs in southeastern New Caledonia including the Île des Pins .
