John McCarthy (born August 9, 1986 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach . The left winger spent almost his entire active career in the organization of the San Jose Sharks , for which he played 88 games in the National Hockey League . Mostly, however, he was on the ice for their farm teams in the American Hockey League , the Worcester Sharks and the San Jose Barracuda . McCarthy also represented the USA national team at the 2018 Winter Olympics .
Career
McCarthy first played on the high school team at St. John's Prep School during his junior years until 2004 . In the fall of 2004 he then joined the Des Moines Buccaneers from the US junior league United States Hockey League . There he reached 18 scorer points in 60 encounters before moving to college . In the 2005/06 season, the left winger played parallel to his studies in economics for the hockey team at Boston University . As a rookie , he completed 32 of the 40 season games and at the end of the season won the championship of Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . He contributed four scorer points. Then McCarthy was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 in the seventh round in 202nd place by the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League . The striker was a regular for the university team for the following two seasons, but could hardly set any accents on the offensive. After completing his third year of college, he had only 16 points in 109 games. Nevertheless, he was elected to the Hockey East All-Academic Team in both years.
The American successfully completed his studies in his last year at Boston University. He was also named team captain. McCarthy recorded 29 points scorer over the entire season, which more than exceeded the values in the categories of points, goals and assists in previous years. Under his aegis as captain, the team also had their best year since McCarthy joined them in 2005. In addition to triumphing in the prestigious Beanpot Tournament - which the university also successfully completed in 2006 and 2007 - against its big rival Boston College , the team won the Hockey East Division for the first time since 2006. There McCarthy was elected to the all-tournament team after leading the team by scorer points. Finally, the team crowned the season by winning the NCAA Division I Championship, the national college championship.
Following this, the San Jose Sharks got the striker to sign his first professional contract in early May 2009 when they offered him a two-year contract valid for the American Hockey League and National Hockey League for a two-year term. After the pre-season training camp McCarthy first found himself in the first half of the 2009/10 game year with the Worcester Sharks in the AHL, but made his NHL debut for the San Jose Sharks on January 9, 2010.
In the summer of 2014, his contract in San Jose was not renewed, so he joined the St. Louis Blues as a free agent . They gave it to their farm team, the Chicago Wolves , during preparation for the 2014/15 season . After only six months he was transferred back to the Worcester Sharks before he signed a new contract with the San Jose Sharks in July 2015, again as a free agent.
Internationally, he represented his home country at the 2018 Winter Olympics and finished seventh there with the team that competed without an NHL player.
In December 2019, McCarthy announced the immediate end of his active career and at the same time switched to the Barracuda coaching staff. He was previously diagnosed with a heart defect that resulted in an ischemic stroke .
