Echinopsis yuquina is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet yuquina refers to the occurrence of the species at Yuquina near the Bolivian city of Culpina .
description
Echinopsis yuquina usually forms groups that can occasionally consist of up to 100 individual shoots. The spherical to short cylindrical shoots reach a diameter of 5 centimeters and heights of up to 15 centimeters. There are 13 to 16 clearly humped ribs , with the humps up to 1 centimeter high. The circular to oval areoles on them are white. Brownish, needle-like and piercing thorns spring from them . The approximately four central spines are often crossed and up to 3 centimeters long. The nine to eleven radiant radial spines have a length of up to 1 centimeter.
The short funnel-shaped flowers are red. They are up to 4 inches long and 3 centimeters in diameter. The egg-shaped, semi-dry fruits tear open.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Echinopsis yuquina is widespread in the Bolivian department of Chuquisaca .
The first description as Lobivia rauschii by Ernst Zecher was published in 1974. David Richard Hunt placed the species in 1991 in the genus Echinopsis . He had to choose a new name because Heimo Friedrich had already described a species with the name Echinopsis rauschii in 1974 .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
