Rügen (strawberry)

'Rügen' is the oldest variety of the garden strawberry ( Fragaria × ananassa ). It was in the Schlossgärtnerei Putbus on the island of Ruegen bred, is out of a red, tendril-less months strawberry as seedling emerged and since 1910 in the trade available.

Appearance

The plant of the 'Rügen' variety grows moderately strong, forms tightly closed, upright and even "high bushes" without runners .

leaves

The leaves of the 'Rügen' variety are small, light to medium green, not very shiny, delicate and the top is regularly wavy. The petiole is very long, thin and finely haired. The middle leaflet is much longer than it is wide, the edge incisions are pointed and deeply serrated.

The flowers are very small, calyx and crown are the same size, the petals are free. The flowers are mostly above the foliage.

fruit

The fruits of the 'Rügen' variety are small, pointed and cone-shaped. They become medium to dark red and shiny. The tip of the fruit is yellow-green before it is fully ripe and the seeds are sessile, narrow and yellowish to darker than the fruit color. The calyx is sessile and the sepals are close to slightly protruding. The taste is sweet and sour and aromatic. The overripe fruits are juicy, very soft and have a wild strawberry aroma.

Diseases

The 'Rügen' variety is very susceptible to powdery mildew .
