Larry Joseph Melnyk (born February 21, 1960 in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The defender played over 400 games for the Boston Bruins , Edmonton Oilers , New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League between 1980 and 1990 . With the Oilers he won the Stanley Cup in the 1985 playoffs .
Career
Larry Melnyk was born in Saskatoon and grew up in Winnipeg and later in New Westminster . There he was active from the 1977/78 season for the New Westminster Bruins in the Western Canada Hockey League , which was only to be called Western Hockey League from the following year . In his first season he won the playoffs for the Ed Chynoweth Cup with the Bruins and then also the prestigious Memorial Cup . In the following year he represented the Canadian junior national team at the Junior World Championship in 1979 and reached fifth place with the team. The Boston Bruins then selected him in 78th position in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft .
With the beginning of the season 1980/81 Melnyk moved to the organization of the Boston Bruins, but he did not succeed in the following years to establish himself in the National Hockey League (NHL). Instead, he was regularly used in the American Hockey League (AHL), with the farm teams of the Bruins, the Springfield Indians , the Baltimore Skipjacks , the Erie Blades and the Hershey Bears . Finally, in March 1984, the defense attorney was handed over to the Edmonton Oilers , who in return sent John Blum to Boston. Even with the Oilers, the Canadian came to regular use with the Nova Scotia Oilers in the AHL, but won the Stanley Cup with Edmonton in the 1985 playoffs , where he came to twelve games and contributed five scorer points .
After this success, Melnyk and Todd Strueby were transferred to the New York Rangers in December 1985 , while the Oilers received Mike Rogers . In the Rangers, the defender was for the first time firmly in the NHL line-up and recorded his career record with 15 points from 73 games in the 1986/87 season. After almost three years, the Rangers sent him along with Willie Huber to the Vancouver Canucks and received Michel Petit in return . With the Canucks, which should be his last NHL station, he was active for about two and a half years before he declared his career after the 1989/90 season for an end. In total, Melnyk had completed 498 NHL games and scored 86 points scorer.
