The Dhammayazika Pagoda (Burmese ဓမ္မ ရာ ဇိ က ဘုရား, pronounced: dəma̰jàzḭka̰ pʰəjá) is a Buddhist stupa in Bagan , Myanmar .

history

The pagoda was built from brick between 1196 and 1198 under King Narapatisithu .

description

The pagoda rests on a rectangular base; in front of the middle of the sides of the rectangle and at the corners there is a smaller pagoda. Stairs on all four sides lead up to the main stupa over three terraces. Miniature stupas stand on the corners of the terraces.
The main stupa shows the classic form elements of the Upper Burmese type: on the base sits first the bell, the upper part of which corresponds to the upturned alms bowl of the monks, then the turban, an uneven number of cornices tapering towards the top; This is followed by the downward and upward directed lotus wreath, finally the banana bud and as the crowning glory the umbrella, called Hti , with the weather vane and the diamond bud.
The unglazed terracotta panels with scenes from the Jatakas , a collection of legends from the life of Buddha, are remarkable .
