Fort William is a district of Thunder Bay in Ontario and is located at the confluence of the Kaministiquia River in Lake Superior . It consists of the boroughs of McKellar and Westford wards . Fort William was an independent city until January 1970 and then merged with the city of Port Arthur and the communities of Neebing and McIntyre to form the city of Thunder Bay. At the time, Fort William was the largest city in northwestern Ontario. Today about 2000 people live there.
The district is now known as Downtown Fort William , although the names Thunder Bay South or The South Core are also common. It is the urban core of the southern half of Thunder Bay and the seat of the Thunder Bay City Council .
