The HMAS Dechaineux (SSG 76) is the fourth submarine in the Australian Collins class .
The ship bears the name of the Australian captain Emile Dechaineux . Dechaineux fell in 1944 in the sea and air battle in the Gulf of Leyte as a result of the first recorded Japanese kamikaze attack .
The submarine was laid down in 1993 in Osborne near Adelaide . Dechaineux's widow and son Commodore Peter Dechaineux took part in the launch in 1998. The warship entered service in 2001.
