The HMAS Sheean (SSG 77) is the fifth Australian Collins-class hunting submarine to be built .

The ship bears the name of the Australian sailor Edward Sheean . The common seaman died in 1942 during the Battle of Timor . He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross .

The submarine was laid down in 1994 in Osborne near Adelaide . Sheean's sister Ivy Hayes took part in the 1999 launch. The warship entered service in 2001.
