The HMAS Rankin (SSG 78) is the sixth and last built submarine of the Australian Collins class .

The ship bears the name of the naval officer Robert William Rankin . The Australian lieutenant captain was killed on the sloop HMAS Yarra in 1942 after the Battle of the Java Sea .

The submarine was laid down in 1995 in Osborne near Adelaide and put into service in 2003.
