Iris Mai (born Iris Bröder , born September 17, 1962 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German chess player . In 1986 she was named International Women's Champion by FIDE .

Iris Bröder began her chess career in the BSG Buna Halle and took part in a GDR women's championship for the first time in 1978 in Torgelow at the age of 15 . Petra Feustel won this championship.

In 1977 and 1980 she became the GDR girl champion . Her coach was Uwe Bönsch . Their game against men and compensation sports were important. In 1981 she won the gold sports badge . She was also interested in good literature and music. In July 1986, she won the women's tournament in Nałęczów, Poland , thus achieving her third WIM standard. She then received the title of International Women's Champion from FIDE .

Individual championships for women

After the championship in 1978 she was third in Suhl in 1979 and played (except 1985) at all GDR women's championships until 1989 in Zittau . She won the GDR women's chess championships in 1982 in Salzwedel , 1984 in Eilenburg and 1987 in Glauchau . She took second place three times: 1981 in Fürstenwalde and 1983 in Cottbus behind Annett Wagner-Michel and 1986 in Nordhausen behind Carola Manger .

In 1981 in Halle she was runner- up behind Brigitte Burchardt at the GDR women's blitz championship.

Team championships

In 1979 and 1981 she won the GDR women's lightning team championship twice with the BSG Buna Halle-Neustadt club.

In the first German national chess league for women , she played from 1991 to 1998 for USV Halle (until 1993 VdS Buna Halle), where she was also registered as a reserve player in the 1st Bundesliga in the 1991/92 season , but was not used . From 1998 to 2004 she played for the SSV Rotation Berlin (except in the 2000/01 season also in the 1st Women's Bundesliga), since 2004 she has played for Rotation Pankow , a spin-off from SSV Rotation Berlin that ran from 2004 to 2007 and in the Played seasons 2008/09 and 2011/12 in the 1st women's Bundesliga.

Since the GDR championship in 1989 she has been playing under the name Iris Mai.
