Günther Möhring

Günther Möhring (born November 25, 1936 in Gera ; † January 14, 2006 in Berlin ) was a German chess and go player.

Möhring had been the international chess champion since 1976 . He learned to play chess when he was ten years old. He was a math teacher by profession.

In 1955 he finished second in the youth championship, which was then still all-German. Möhring, who lives in Halle (Saale) , was also successful in correspondence chess : he won the youth championship, which was held from 1956 to 1958. His greatest success in close chess was the GDR championship in 1963. He played with the GDR national team at the 1964 Chess Olympiad in Tel Aviv on the second reserve board, where he got the best result with 11 out of 13. In 1968 he and his team Buna Halle , again in close chess, won the GDR Cup. He later switched to Chemie Lützkendorf , where he played on board 1, later on to AdW Berlin . In the early 1990s Möhring played for PSV / BSV Wuppertal , most recently he was a member of Chemie Weißensee , where he was a player and coach.

In 1968 he was GDR champion in Go .

Möhring's last Elo rating was 2294, and he reached his highest rating of 2450 in May 1974.
