Christian Zickelbein (born June 12, 1937 in Wiesenburg , Brandenburg province ) is a Hamburg chess official who is primarily active in youth chess , the Hamburg chess club and the German federal chess league. In 2002 the German Chess Federation expressed its gratitude and recognition in the form of an honorary certificate. In 2004 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .

Youth chess

Zickelbein's parents moved to Hamburg when he was twelve years old. Since 1951 he has been a member of the Hamburger SK. In 1956, at the suggestion of Emil Dähne , the then chairman of the HSK and president of the German Chess Federation , he founded a school chess group as a student at the Heinrich Hertz Gymnasium. In an effort to provide financial support for the chess group, Zickelbein co-founded the Hamburg Youth Chess Association in 1959. From 1966 Zickelbein worked as a teacher at the Uhlenhorst-Barmbek grammar school, where he not only headed the school chess group, but also the Hamburg chess youth until 1972. The foundation of the German Chess Youth in 1971 also came from his initiative . From 1972 to 1986 Zickelbein did not work as a chess official, but took part in the youth chess camps in Hamburg until the 1980s as a supervisor.

Hamburger SK

From 1986 to 2017 Christian Zickelbein was chairman of the Hamburger SK. The reason was the separation of the HSK from the HSV . In 1991 he organized a busy grandmaster tournament and pushed ahead with the construction of a clubhouse, which was moved into in 1996. As a source of income he uses, among other things, chess presentations in Hamburg shopping centers. He was also the editor-in-chief of the club newspaper “aktuell”.

Chess League

Zickelbein was also the team captain of the HSK Bundesliga team, for which he was used once in the 1990/91 season . Through this function he became spokesman for the Bundesliga clubs at the suggestion of Rudolf Veith. Here he tried to coordinate the Bundesliga clubs and improve the presentation of the Bundesliga. Soon he was striving for greater autonomy from the German Chess Federation, which he achieved in 2007 with the establishment of the Schachbundesliga eV. From the 2008/2009 season onwards, this new club, which Zickelbein chairs as the founding board, is responsible for organizing the German Chess League.
