Raphael Lagunow (born August 7, 2000 in Berlin ) is a German chess player . In 2019 he was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE .

Chess development and successes

Raphael Lagunow played first tournaments at the age of five and soon achieved considerable success, for example as German runner-up or champion in the U10 age group in 2009 and 2010. At the championships in 2014 and 2017, he was third in his age group.

His first club were the chess penguins Berlin. With TuS Makkabi Berlin, he became German champion in the U12 age group in 2011 with a team that included the later (2016) U16 European champion Leonid Sawlin and the later (2015) German U14 champion Emil Schmidek. In 2017 he became German champion of the state associations with the Berlin youth selection.

In addition to his father, his coaches included Julia Richter (2005–2008), Eugen Tripolsky (2008–2009), Marcos Kiesekamp (2009–2010), Sergei Kalinitschew (since 2014) and Jakob Meister (since 2017).

The first national station in general gaming operations was SG Lasker Steglitz-Wilmersdorf , with whom Lagunow played in the Oberliga Nord-Ost from 2012 to 2014. Since the 2014/15 season he has been playing with SK Zehlendorf in the 2nd Bundesliga, North Season .

In 2017 Raphael Lagunow won the U18 European Championship with the German team (with Dmitrij Kollars , Thore Perske , Vincent Keymer and Leonid Sawlin). A year later he won the bronze medal with the team at this championship. In 2017 he finished 3rd at the U18 Rapid World Championship.

In 2019 he was part of the German selection at the Mitropapokal for the first time .

In 2018 he took 2nd place at the Erfurt Chess Festival and at the Open Hessian Championship. At the end of 2019, Lagunow took 1st place in the championship tournament at the Erfurt Chess Festival.

Raphael Lagunow has held the title of International Master since March 2019. He fulfilled the required standards at the Grenke Chess Open in Karlsruhe 2018, the U20 Junior World Championships 2018 in Gebze and the Staufer Open in Schwäbisch Gmünd 2019.

Private

Raphael Lagunow is currently studying business administration at the Berlin School of Economics and Law .

Chess family Lagunow

Raphael Lagunow is the son of the international master Alexander Lagunow . His mother Juliane (née Woitinski) was third in the German U20 Championship in Münster in 1990. Raphael's older sister Elina became German U12 female champion in 2009.
