Later he devoted himself exclusively to the game of chess . From a young age he was an excellent player. In the Berlin chess circles he enjoyed great popularity because of his lovable character.

Erich Cohn was believed to have died on August 28, 1918 during World War I fighting on the Western Front in France (the exact date of his death is not known). It is located on the German war cemetery in Neuville-St. Vaast is buried in the Pas-de-Calais department .

Tournaments

The first championship tournament in which he took part was that in Nuremberg in 1906. There he achieved a respectable success that justified high hopes. The fact that this did not come true despite his eminent talent was due to a certain lack of perseverance and uniformity as well as unfavorable external circumstances. In some tournaments, e.g. B. in Ostend in 1907 and in Breslau in 1912, he played the first half perfectly, but fell off completely in the second.

At the international tournament in St. Petersburg in 1909, he won the eighth to tenth prize shared with Hersz Salwe and Carl Schlechter .

Several times he took part in the Berlin tournaments with four participants. Here he took first place shared with Richard Teichmann in 1909 (ahead of Rudolf Spielmann and Curt von Bardeleben ), and in 1910 he was second behind Teichmann. In 1912 he finished third together with Richard Réti in Abbazia , in Stockholm he finished second behind Alexander Alekhine . In 1914 he won the Berlin championship tournament together with Spielmann for the last time.

In 1906 he won the Berlin championship ahead of Horatio Caro and Otto Schewe . In 1910 he repeated this success and won ahead of Ehrhardt Post and Georg Wiarda .

Duels

Erich Cohn played competitions against well-known chess masters: in Munich in 1909 he was defeated by Rudolf Spielmann 1: 2 (+1 = 0-2), in 1909 in Berlin Eduard Lasker with 1: 3 (+1 = 0-3). In 1906 he defeated Horatio Caro in Berlin with 5.5: 1.5 (+5 = 1 −1).
