economy

Until 1981

Was when the city bigger, they depended economically on the work of the car manufacturer Rootes Group , the later of Chrysler United Kingdom / Chrysler Europe adopted and finally to Peugeot / Talbot was sold, and at the Pressed Steel Company . Both companies ceased production in 1981, giving Linwood a high unemployment rate . 13,000 workers are said to have lost their jobs directly or indirectly as a result of the two plant closings.

The automobile plant was built in 1962 to manufacture the Hillman Imp , a revolutionary small car that went into production the following spring and was manufactured until 1976. The factory had the advantage of a direct rail link, which enabled the cars to be shipped by rail to all parts of the UK . Later the successor to the Hillman Imp, the Chrysler Sunbeam , was built there. When this model was discontinued in 1981, it marked the end of the automobile factory after less than 20 years. Most of the factory was demolished soon after, but part remained until 1996 - 15 years after the last car left the production lines.

Since 1981

From 1980 to 1995, Linwood had one of the highest unemployment rates in Scotland. A new shopping and entertainment center next to the M8 motorway opened its doors in 1996. Over the years Linwood became almost a ghost town and many houses fell into disrepair. New, small houses are currently being built to replace the old, large apartment blocks.
