In 1811 the Glasgow, Paisley and Ardrossan Canal reached Johnstone. Until its closure in 1885, Johnstone remained the canal's terminus. Later other industries settled in Johnstone, including from the sectors of mechanical engineering, metal processing, chemicals and paper. Coal was also mined in Johnstone.
