The Johnstone Mill is a former spinning mill in the Scottish town of Johnstone in the Renfrewshire council area . It is the oldest surviving cotton mill in Scotland and one of the oldest in the United Kingdom . It is considered a rare example of a spinning mill with water-powered machinery, as was common in the late 18th century. The building is on High Street on the northwestern edge of Johnstone on the banks of Black Cart Water .

history

The oldest building was built in 1782 for Corse, Burns & Co. built. As early as 1786, the production area was almost doubled with the construction of another building. In 1837 a fire destroyed the southern part of the building. A steam engine was installed in the course of the reconstruction . Additional buildings were added in 1856 and around 1870. After almost 220 years of continuous operation, the spinning mill was finally closed.

In 2003 the building was added to the register of endangered buildings in Scotland. At that time, a US shoelace manufacturer was using the building. There were plans to accommodate apartments in the former spinning mill, which were approved the following year. This was also the last year of use of the premises. As of 2007, vandalism has been reported inside the building. In 2008, the renovation permit issued in 2004 expired without being used. In the following years the condition of the building gradually deteriorated. After a fire broke out in 2009, another fire in April 2010 caused considerable property damage. Large parts of the building were lost in further fires in June of the same year and finally in July 2012. It is only preserved as a ruin and classified in the highest hazard class. Due to the poor condition, a former inclusion in the Scottish list of monuments in the highest category A was revoked in 2016.
