The Reegs were an indie rock band from Manchester , England . The band was formed in 1987 by two former members of the British post-punk band The Chameleons and released two albums from 1991. The group also played several concerts, mainly in their home country. The Reegs combined melodic alternative rock with style elements from folk , punk and wave .

history

After the death of their friend and manager Tony Fletcher (Kennedy Street Enterprises), the British band The Chameleons temporarily split into two camps in 1987. On the one hand, lead singer Mark Burgess and drummer John Lever, together with guitarists Andy Clegg and Andy Whitaker, formed the project The Sun and The Moon , which had significantly more pop influences and was thus deliberately differentiated from the style of the music of The Chameleons. On the other hand, the two guitarists Dave Fielding and Reg Smithies launched the independent band The Reegs at the same time .

Dave Fielding was born on November 11, 1959 in Middleton, north Manchester . He started playing music as a teenager and formed his first band with four friends from Hollin and Mooreclose High School. After The Chameleons ended, independent label Imaginary Records asked guitarists Fielding and Smithies if they 'd record a cover version of a The Kinks song for a tribute album . From this the band developed, which initially consisted of Dave Fielding (guitar, vocals, banjo) and Reg Smithies (guitar, bass, vocals, percussion).

They found musical support with the recording of their first single See My Friends , which was released in April 1989 on Imaginary Records, in guest musicians Stuart Carr (harmonica) and Wayne Lavery (keyboard). This was produced by the band themselves and the sound engineer Shan Hira. A second single called Chorus Of The Lost , in which the musician friend Gary Lavery (vocals, keyboard) was now a permanent member of the band, was released in August 1990 on Imaginary Records.

In 1991 the LP Return Of The Seamonkeys was released, which included the songs of the first two singles. In 1993 the album Rock The Magic Rock followed . Both records were released by Imaginary Records. In 1997 two more singles were produced with As You Leave and You Told Me Before .

The Reegs played some concerts in England, especially in the north of the British Isles in small clubs such as The Roadhouse in Manchester , The Duchess of York in Leeds and The Witchwood in Ashton , as well as in various locations in Manchester city center.

In 2009, in the course of the re-release of the material from The Chameleons, a double CD entitled The Reegs was finally released on Blue Apple Music, which combined the entire recordings of the band on a single compilation .
