The Swedish Motor Assemblies Sdn. Bhd. is an automobile manufacturer founded in 1967 by the Swedish company Volvo Personvagnar AB as a local assembly plant with headquarters in Shah Alam , Malaysia . From 1999 to spring 2010 the plant was part of the Ford Motor Company .

Production began in February 1968 with the assembly of the Volvo 144 . The model was produced for the national market until 1996. As a better equipped model, there was also the Volvo 240 from 1984 . In the mid-90s, the Volvo S40 and its station wagon version, the Volvo V40 , finally followed . With the takeover by Ford, Volvo also committed to assemble the Land Rover Defender in all of its plants.

The luxurious Volvo S60 was added in 2001 as the first model from the 2000s . This was the first time Volvo entered the upper middle class on the Malaysian market , followed two years later by the Volvo S80 and the SUV Volvo XC90 . In 2004 the S40 was finally replaced by its second generation . The Volvo V50 station wagon was only added the following year. In July 2006, the Volvo C70 coupe-convertible made its debut. The Volvo C30 followed in 2008 , which was subject to the facelift the following year . The old S80, which was still in its first generation here, was relocated to Jakarta , Indonesia in the summer of 2009 on the occasion of the new Indobuana Autoraya joint venture . The replacement came in April 2010 with the current AS model .

Up to 6000 units can be assembled in the Malaysian factory per year. Around 500 employees work in two shifts. The factory premises cover a total area of ​​25,000 . The in-house sales organization Volvo Car Malaysia Sdn Bhd is responsible for sales of the vehicles . The vehicles assembled here can be recognized in the vehicle identification number , which have a 5 in the eleventh position for the assembly plant .
