O Grove (official name in Galician language , Spanish El Grove ) is a Spanish municipality in the comarca of O Salnés in the province of Pontevedra , Galicia .

geography

O Grove is a 21.89 km² peninsula which is connected to the Iberian Peninsula by the O Vao headland . On the western side of the isthmus is the beach A Lanzada, made famous by the accident of the tanker Prestige .

O Grove itself is connected to A Toxa Island by a bridge .

Population development

According to the INE, O Grove had 10,650 inhabitants on January 1, 2019 , spread over two so-called parroquias : San Martiño do Grove and San Vicente do Grove . The population density is higher in the coastal areas than in the interior of the peninsula.

Like many coastal towns, O Grove has been heavily dependent on the sea: inshore fishing and mussel farming have been the main sources of income.

In the recent past, however, the place has experienced a rapidly growing tourist importance; a large number of hotels and restaurants of all price ranges, a golf course and other leisure options have emerged.
