Catoira is of national importance because of its annual Viking festival, the Romería Vikinga , which is celebrated on the first Sunday in August. A historical event is re-enacted when Vikings tried to cross rivers inland and plunder the legendary treasure of Santiago de Compostela - and were repulsed by the locals.
