The Illa da Toxa (official name in Galician language ; Spanish Isla de La Toja ) is a smaller island within the Ría de Arousa bay on the north-west coast of Spain. It belongs to the province of Pontevedra in the autonomous community of Galicia . The island is connected to the O Grove Peninsula by a bridge . Parts of the island are a nature reserve, it is a renowned holiday destination, which is especially popular because of its thermal springs and wellness offers.

Naming

The island has several names in both Spanish and Galician. In the Spanish language, besides “Isla de La Toja”, the names “La Toja Grande”, “de Loujo” and “de Los Baños de Loujo” are also used. The name "Grande" is used to distinguish it from the neighboring island "Isla de La Toja Pequeña", which means "Small Island La Toja" in German. Similarly, in the Galician language, in addition to the name “Illa da Toxa”, there are also the names “Illa da Toxa Grande” and “Illa de Louxo”.

history

The people of O Grove used the island as a pasture for their cattle, which they transported over in boats. In the 19th century, the thermal mud and the medicinal water springs , which were already known in Roman times, were rediscovered . In the course of time, hotels in the four- and five-star range emerged and tourism became the dominant economic factor. Apartments have also been built in recent years .

In 1989, the annual meeting of the Secretariat of the Bilderberg Group took place on the island , at which influential personalities from politics and business from all over the world come together.

description

Today the island consists of three parts. The north is characterized by a golf course. In the middle of the island there is a pine forest. The southern half is built up with three larger hotels, residential buildings, leisure facilities, water sports, shopping facilities and, among other things, an old soap factory. A specialty is the 12th century hermitage of San Sebastián , a chapel completely covered with shells.
