Ría de Arousa in the province of Pontevedra

The Ría de Arousa [ ˈria de aˈɾousa ] ( Gal. "Ría of Arousa", Spanish. Ría de Arosa ) is the largest ría , a narrow sea bay penetrating deep into the interior of Spain . It belongs to the four Rías Baixas in Galicia and is located between the more northern Ría de Muros and the more southern Ría de Pontevedra . The Ría de Arousa is bounded by the peninsulas Barbanza ( province A Coruña ) and Salnés ( Pontevedra ).

The Ría de Arousa includes numerous large and small islands, including the Arousa , E Toxa , Sálvora in the mouth and the Cortegada at the head end; A Toxa is particularly well-known with its lido and several 3 and 4 star hotels. The largest rivers that flow into the Ría de Arousa are the Ulla at the head end and the Umia , which forms the O Grove peninsula alongside the coast of Cambados . The most important coastal settlements are Ribeira , Poboa do Caramiñal , Boiro and Rianxo in the north, Vilagarcía de Arousa , Vilanova de Arousa , Cambados and O Grove in the south and Arousa on the island of the same name.

The northern side of the ría, which belongs to the province of A Coruña , is steep and rugged and borders on the coast with the mountain range of Barbanza . The beach drops steeply into the sea and forms sandbanks at the inner indentations.

The south side, which belongs to the province of Pontevedra , is in the mouth of the Umia alluvial land . The coast is shallow, with extensive sand banks on which sand clams such as cockles are grown. The most famous sandbanks are those of Sarrido on the Umia river delta and Os Lombos do Ulla on the Ulla delta .
