In order to connect the city of Vigo to the Spanish high-speed network, it was necessary to completely rebuild the Vigo-Urzáiz station. In order to enable Vigo to continue passenger traffic, the Spanish Ministry of Construction and Transport decided to build a temporary station at the Guixar freight yard in Vigo.

Construction work on the station began at the end of 2009 and was completed a good year later in August 2011. The construction costs were originally estimated at eleven million euros, they came to 17.5 million euros in the end. On August 27, 2011, the Spanish Transport Minister José Blanco López opened the station together with the Mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero .

The Spanish railway company Renfe complained that the relocation of traffic from Urzáiz to Guixar would have lost a good 7,000 passengers on regional traffic.

The station is a terminal station with an area of a good 1000 square meters, it has three platforms, each with 100, 165 and 285 meter long platforms and five tracks. The station has a two-story, modern style reception building. While the station management and train driver have rooms on the first floor, there is a Renfe travel center, a waiting room and a cafeteria on the ground floor. There is a large car park in front of the train station.
