Bembrive is a parish and a district ( entidad local menor ) in the northwestern Spanish city of Vigo in the province of Pontevedra in the autonomous community of Galicia .

location

Bembrive lies at an altitude of about 50 meters above sea level. d. M. above the bay of the Ría de Vigo and is about five kilometers (driving distance) in a south-easterly direction from the city center. Another remarkable Romanesque church in the urban area of Vigo is in the suburb of Castrelos, about three kilometers to the west .

economy

Agriculture, especially cattle breeding, traditionally played the largest role in the economic life of the small town; Around 100 storage buildings ( hórreos ) have been preserved in the area. Today many residents live directly or indirectly from the port and industrial facilities in the greater Vigo area.

history

Bembrive was independent until the middle of the 19th century ; then the place was incorporated into Vigo.

Attractions

  • The parish church of Santiago is a late Romanesque building from the 12th century with a polygonally broken apse on the outside with a richly decorated console frieze below the eaves and three simple but interesting portals: The Gothic west portal, which is pointed at the apex of the arch, has four set columns - two of them with one sinuous ribbon ornament; the capitals show rather Romanesque motifs ( plaited ribbon etc.). The archivolt arches are profiled ; their front sides again present braided band patterns as well as star bars and a block frieze as the outer frame. The south portal is rather simple, but shows an unfinished corner motif next to the door lintel with a representation of animals that is difficult to identify. The portal on the north side has a very decorative tympanum : within a square recess there is an elongated quatrefoil with pointed ends that intersect in the center and form a cross motif; Within the quatrefoil and to the side of it there are individual circular, star and spiral motifs - all things that can be assigned to the heavenly or cosmic sphere.
  • In front of the church is a baroque cross from the 18th century, the crucifix of which stands on a skeletonized skull. The reverse side shows an expressive Pietà .

Festivals

The most important festival in Bembrive is that of St. Blasius ( San Blas ), which is celebrated every year on February 3rd.
