Fernando Zunzunegui Rodríguez (born October 5, 1943 in Vigo , † August 28, 2014 ) was a Spanish football player .

Athletic career

Zunzunegui began his career in his native city near Celta de Vigo . For the then second division team, he made his debut in 1963 at the age of 19 in the Segunda División . In the 1963/64 season, the young defender established himself as a regular player and soon made a name for himself in a higher class.

In the summer of 1965, Zunzunegui moved to Real Madrid , where he had to wait over a year for his competitive debut and then barely got beyond the role of a supplementary player. After he had contributed to the championship title with six season appearances in the season 1966/67 , he was in the following season, in which he was 26 of 30 games under the direction of Miguel Muñoz on the field, over long distances regular strength. After that, however, he increasingly moved into the second tier and played almost half of the league games in the following three years. Nevertheless, he was in the final for the European Cup Winners' Cup 1970/71 both in the regular final and in the replay in the defense row next to José Luis , Gregorio Benito and Ignacio Zoco , but missed the European Cup triumph. In the 1971/72 season , which he ended with his fourth championship win with the Madrilenians, he completed two more games.

In autumn 1973 Zunzunegui left after 112 games for Real Madrid, 76 of them in the championship, the Primera División and moved to UD Levante . In Valencia he played another season in the Segunda División.
