Aphonopelma johnnycashi is aspecies of tarantula (Theraphosidae)foundin North America . The first description dedicated the specific epithet to the country singer Johnny Cash . On the one hand, they paid tribute to his appearance in the Californian prison Folsom Prison , in the vicinity of which the species was found, on the other hand, they found a certain analogy between the predominantly black-colored males and the mostly black-clad singer who was nicknamed "Man in Black".
features
Adult Aphonopelma johnnycashi can reach a length of up to six inches (15 centimeters). A clear sexual dimorphism can be seen between the sexes . The holotype of the species is a male native to the Ione area at the foot of the Sierra Nevada . This shows a black to black-brown prosoma . The abdomen of the same color is provided with short dark and longer reddish hairs. The relatively long legs are short haired black and gray. The somewhat larger and more compact females have a color tending towards gray-brown tones and somewhat shorter, reddish-gray haired legs.
Differences to the similar species Aphonopelma eutylenum and Aphonopelma iodius can be determined on the basis of morphological, molecular and geographical features.
Distribution, habitat and endangerment
Aphonopelma johnnycashi occurs widespread along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada in California and is considered "not endangered".
