Urania Mella Serrano (born November 15, 1899 in Vigo , † May 26, 1945 in Lugo ) was a Galician politician and a forerunner of feminism . She was the president of the Antifascist Women’s Union, which in 1936 counted 50,000 members in Spain and was a section of the international women’s association against war and fascism. She was also a member of the International Red Aid .

Life

Urania Mella Serrano was born in Vigo in 1899. She had twelve brothers. Her father was the anarchist intellectual Ricardo Mella Cea . Her mother was Esperanza Serrano, the daughter of Juan Serrano Oteiza , a well-known anarchist from Madrid and editor of Revista Social magazine . She received a modern, non-religious education and studied fine arts at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vigo. She was socially and culturally very involved and, among other things, advocated teaching illiterate women to read and write.

Urania Mella was married to Solleiro Humberto Rivera (1896-1936) and had four children.

After the military coup of 1936 , Urania Mella was persecuted by the authorities for her social commitment. She and her husband had to flee to Redonela, where they were both arrested and sentenced to death by a court martial. Urania Mella's sentence was later commuted to a 12-year prison term. However, her husband Solleiro Humberto Rivera's sentence was carried out.

She was detained in Santurrarán Gipuzkoa prison. She was released after nine years. One month after her release, she died of a brain tumor in Lugo at the age of 45 .
