Dom João Evangelista de Lima Vidal (born April 2, 1874 in Aveiro , Portugal ; † January 5, 1958 there ) was a Portuguese clergyman, with various high offices, he was Bishop of Luanda , the first bishop of Vila Real and the first Bishop of Aveiro. He also worked as a fiction writer.

Live and act

João Lima Vidal was born in Aveiro in 1874 and had a happy childhood. He wanted to be a priest and began his studies at the seminary in Coimbra , then at the age of 15 he went to Rome , where he studied theology at the Gregorian University. In 1891 he graduated in philosophy, in 1892 he received his doctorate there. In 1896 he was ordained a priest. He also joined the Third Order of the Dominicans .

From 1909 to 1915 he was the Bishop of Angola , today's Diocese of Luanda, and returned to Portugal in 1915, where he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese-Patriarchate of Lisbon from 1915 to 1923 , under Antonio Mendes Cardinal Bello .

In 1923 the diocese of Vila Real was founded, and he became its first bishop and served until 1933.

Lima Vidal had worked hard for the establishment of the diocese of Aveiro in his hometown and achieved this goal in 1933 and thus became the first bishop of Aveiro until his death. There he founded the Santa Joana seminary , which is named after the city's saint.

When Lima Vidal died on January 5, 1958 at the age of 83, the city experienced the largest burial in its history, tens of thousands of people lined the streets and accompanied the funeral procession.

In 1974 a statue was erected in honor of the bishop in Aveiro, and a street in his hometown also bears his name.

He was also active as an author and wrote a volume of poetry and a Christian novel in 1910 and a collection of stories in 1912.
