San Paolo alla Regola is a church, baroque monastery and titular deaconry in the Roman Rione Regola

history

It is a very old church. According to tradition, St. Paul began his sermons here and lived here during his stay in Rome, as there was a Jewish quarter here at the time.

During the excavations from 1978 to 1982, historical walls of a four-story building were found, the use of which has changed over time.

The origin of the church is unknown. According to tradition, it was founded by Pope Silvester I in the 4th century next to the oratory , which arose from the saint's apartment.

The church is first mentioned in 1186 as a branch of San Lorenzo in Damaso .

After the Sacco di Roma , the small parish that existed at the time was dissolved. The church was given to the Augustinian Discalceates . The headquarters of the order was at the church of Santa Maria del Popolo . In 1619 the church was handed over to the Sicilian branch of the Third Order of the Franciscans and a large monastery, college and the reconstruction of the church were financed with funds from the Spanish king. Construction began in 1687 and was completed in 1728. During the construction, the Church of San Cesario was demolished. The original construction plans were revised by Giovanni Battista Boronzone, a brother of Giacomo Ciolli, and completed by Giuseppe Sardi.

The college survived the secularization of the 19th century, and the Third Order administered the church into the early 21st century. Since its reopening in 2008, the church has been looked after by the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae , a Peruvian society of apostolic life under papal law , but remains in the possession of the Third Order.
