Antonio Rosario Mennonna

Antonio Rosario Mennonna (born May 27, 1906 in Muro Lucano , Province of Potenza , Italy ; † November 6, 2009 ibid) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Nardò . He was most recently the second oldest living bishop of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Mennonna studied at the Archbishop's Seminary in Benevento and philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Seminary in Posillipo . He was ordained a priest on August 12, 1928 by the Archbishop of Muro Lucano , Giuseppe Scarlata , and then completed a doctorate in classical literature at the University of Naples Federico II . He worked as a priest in Puglia and taught at the Potenza seminary . He was the principal of the high school in Muro Lucano.

1955 he was by Pope Pius XII. appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Muro Lucano, from 1986 Archdiocese of Potenza-Muro Lucano-Marsico Nuovo . He was ordained bishop on March 13, 1955 by the Bishop of Acerenza , Domenico Picchinenna ; Co- consecrators were Matteo Guido Sperandeo , Bishop of Calvi e Teano , and Augusto Bertazzoni , Archbishop of Potenza e Marsico Nuovo .

In 1962 he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Nardò-Gallipoli by Pope John XXIII. He took part in all the sessions of the Second Vatican Council and was responsible for the establishment of 13 independent parishes; he had 23 churches built and the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta of Nardò (basilica from 1980) restored. His resignation was granted by Pope John Paul II in 1983.

In 2008 he published his work Dialoghi con personaggi dell'antica Roma (Dialogues with people from ancient Rome).
