Joseph Cardinal Coutts (born July 21, 1945 in Amritsar , India ) is a Pakistani clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Karachi .

Life

Joseph Coutts studied at Christ the King Seminary in Karachi and was ordained priestly for the diocese of Lahore on January 9, 1971 in Lahore . After further studies in Rome he became professor of philosophy at Christ the King Regional Seminary in Karachi, later rector of St. Mary's Minor Seminary in Lahore and vicar general .

Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor bishop in the diocese of Hyderabad in Pakistan on May 5, 1988 . The episcopal ordination donated him on September 16, 1988 Bishop Bonaventure Patrick Paul OFM ; Co- consecrators were Armando Trindade , Bishop of Lahore, and Archbishop Emanuele Gerada , Apostolic Nuncio in Pakistan . With the resignation of Bonaventure Patrick Paul on September 1, 1990, he succeeded him as Bishop of Hyderabad. On June 27, 1998, he was appointed bishop of Faisalabad . On January 25, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Karachi.

cardinal

On Pentecost Sunday , May 20, 2018, Pope Francis announced a consistory for the creation of new cardinals for June 28, 2018, after the public prayer of Regina caeli, and named Joseph Coutts as one of 14 candidates. In this consistory he accepted him as cardinal priest of San Bonaventura da Bagnoregio in the college of cardinals . The takeover of his titular church took place on September 29 of the same year. On October 6 of the same year, the Pope appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue .

Coutts is the director of Caritas in Pakistan.
