Carmen Sammut

Carmen Sammut SMNDA (born December 20, 1951 in Malta ) is a Maltese Roman Catholic nun .

Life

Carmen Sammut initially studied to become a teacher and worked as a teacher in Malta and Africa. In Algeria she was in contact with the religious order of the Missionary Sisters of Notre Dame of Africa and completed a program in London as well as a two-year assignment abroad in Malawi with the religious order. She entered the Novitiate of the Order in 1974 in Ottawa, Canada. Between 1983 and 1989 she studied at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI) in Rome. She then worked as an English teacher for girls in Mauritania, Tunisia and Yemen.

From 2000 to 2006 she was Provincial of the Order of North Africa (Algeria, Tunisia and Mauritania) based in Algiers. In 2011 Sammut was elected Superior General of the Missionary Sisters of Notre Dame of Africa (SMNDA) .

In 2013 she was elected chairwoman of the Unione Internazionale Superiore Generali (UISG) (German: International Association of Superiors General) for a six-year term (until 2019). Carmen Sammut succeeded Sr. Mary Lou Wirtz FCJM. The UISG includes the general superiors of around 1900 female orders and congregations . Pope Francis appointed Sr. Carmen Sammut as a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue .

She is fluent in Maltese, English, French and Arabic.
