Carlos Cardinal Aguiar Retes (born January 9, 1950 in Tepic ) is a Mexican clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Mexico City .

Life

Carlos Aguiar Retes attended the boys' seminary in Tepic (1961–1969) and studied theology at the seminary of Montezuma (USA) (1969–1972) and at the seminary of Tula, Hidalgo (1972–1973). He was ordained a priest on April 22, 1973 and studied Biblical Theology at the Pontifical Latin American College "Pius" and at the Pontifical Biblical Institute from 1974 to 1977 . From 1978 to 1991 he was rector of the seminary of Tepic. In 1991 he completed a doctorate in biblical theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University . In 1996 he became Professor of Scripture at the Pontifical University of Mexico.

On May 28, 1997, he was appointed Bishop of Texcoco by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained episcopal on June 29th of the same year by the Archbishop of Monterrey , Cardinal Adolfo Antonio Suárez Rivera ; Co- consecrators were his predecessor, Bishop Magín Camerino Torreblanca Reyes , and Alfonso Humberto Robles Cota , Bishop of Tepic .

On February 5, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Tlalnepantla . The inauguration took place on March 31 of the same year.

From 2004 to 2006 he was general secretary of the Mexican Bishops' Conference CEM, of which he was president until 2012. Since 2007 he has been a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue .

Carlos Aguiar Retes was General Secretary of CELAM from 1999 to 2003. At the 23rd general assembly of CELAM in Montevideo in 2011 he was elected chairman of the Latin American Bishops' Council CELAM for four years. His term of office ended in May 2015 and was succeeded by Rubén Salazar Gómez .

In the consistory of November 19, 2016, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Fabiano e Venanzio a Villa Fiorelli in the college of cardinals . He took possession of his titular church on June 11 of the following year.

On January 14, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America .

In terms of church politics, Cardinal Aguiar Retes is considered close to Pope Francis. The Pope appointed him Archbishop of Mexico on December 7, 2017 . The inauguration took place on February 5 of the following year.
