The Assam earthquake in 1897 struck Assam , British India on June 12, 1897 , and had a magnitude of approximately 8.1 M w .
It is believed that the focus of the earthquake was 32 km below the earth's surface. In an area of 390,000 km², the masonry of most of the buildings was destroyed and it was felt in an area of 650,000 km² from Burma to Delhi . Many buildings in neighboring Bhutan were badly damaged. There were several aftershocks.
Despite the strength of the quake, the death rate was not very high with 1500 victims, but the damage to property was enormous.
background
The earthquake struck the south-southwest side of the Oldham Fault , which forms the northern boundary of the Shillong Plateau in the Indian Plate . There was a displacement of at least 11 m of the fault, but a maximum dislocation of 16 m was also measured, one of the largest dislocations ever recorded after an earthquake.
